Although I have not heard anything about this recently I guess the pending merger of American Airlines and US Air has brought this debate back up. Most major airlines currently outsource their heavy maintenance. While this is nothing new, think TRAMCO and the like, the newer trend is outsourcing to companies that are not in the USA.
This is a trend that I do not think will slow down or stop anytime soon. Of course the unions are up in arms over this (who can blame them) but the truth is that personnel is one of the highest costs for any airline.
There is the nagging question of regulation at these MROs that are outside the country but I feel that they are being addressed. The FAA requires the MROs to operate with similar regulations as any MRO inside the states-but-who is doing the regulating?
I don't think that any airline would get rid of ALL their maintenance to go the full foreign MRO and contract MX route. They know that NO ONE would take care of the planes as well as their own employees.
Anyway check out this link to read the article that brought all this up in my mind:
Congress Wary of Outsourcing Aircraft Maintenance-Roll Call Policy
It is the beginning of the end for the Airline Mechanic and the start of the MRO mechanic.
ReplyDeleteIf you have ever seen one of the aircraft that arrive back from a Heavy Check in OR out of the U.S., then you know how much has to be fixed on the plane after it returns to its owner. If you've ever worked in one of these repair stations, then you REALLY know what goes on behind the scenes!
Money x Greed = more money. Its a simple corporate theory. It is used in ANY business out there now, airlines included.
It has been a long time since your last post, Goat. I hope those thugs (your senior managers) have not curbed your spirit. Although you are clear and open about who you work for, I've NEVER seen a comment critical of your employer/airline published in this space. In my view, they ought to commend and reward your positive efforts, not try to shut you up. As we all know, there is a LOT more to any airline beyond pilots and FAs. You give us a brief insight into one of the usually unseen, but essential aspects of the operation. And, if you and your maintenance colleagues are not one of the Most Important parts of the larger picture, I guess I don't know what it might be. As I said, you've ALWAYS had positive things to say about SWA and we know that you love doing what you do. Again, I hope that they are not trying to silence you! When you've got something to say, a new post would be most appreciated. Best wishes, -C.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the cost of doing business is always front and center. Very insightful article, keep up the good work!

ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful aircraft. I have heard that those that are fixing air crafts have to take special care to get the job done. I was surprised to learn that there are little holes in the craft that frequently need to be checked. If there are bugs that get into those little holes it could harm the air craft. I think that it is important to make sure that the plane is always in good use for flying. http://www.specializedaero.net/
