The Power Of The Internet!!

We at work have been using a "web based" maintenance manual for some time now and we are transitioning to a new one as we speak. These programs hold a lot of promise for the future of our industry but are not quite "the end all be all" yet.

I have found that there are a few great web sites out there that are 737 related and one in particular that offers some really good troubleshooting tips. It's kind of a grey area in that we are all trained to use the maintenance manuals exclusively. I guess what I am saying is these sites are REALLY helpful but they are still just "reference only" material.

The best of the bunch is "Sjap's 737 maintenance experience exchange". On this site there are plenty of helpful hints from mechanics all over who have run into issues and were nice enough to share them here.

Is there a reason we should not use all available resources to make us better mechanics? We all have little tricks that we have learned over the years to help us in our troubleshooting. Sjap's site is one of the tools that the Internet has brought to us and it is in my virtual toolbox (actually it's in my "bookmarks").

  1. Hey there Mr. Goat......Yes interesting these days........ The "Internet"........has changed everything......in all aspects of our lives..........the "Old School" ....mentality........was to learn and memorize most things......in life......school...etc.....
"New School".......knowing "Where" to find those answers, is more important than knowing the material by memory.....???!!!

Maybe a 'maintenance book/manual/web link..........that shows all of the "Lessons" learned the hard way........ "Shortcuts"....from lessons learned those same, hard ways....but written as if for a first grader.....very simple step by step instructions...listed 1, 2 ,3 and so on......and not long and winding road paragraphs........(my opinion)
When I ran N/C's for 25 years, I sure in the Hell, got tired of learning a lesson the hard way........AGAIN and AGAIN......so I would make cheat sheets for Everything.....I had the most Awesome personal "maintenance manual"....of my own writing.......!!!!.....step 1 should always, be for trouble shooting....should be "brandishing" a big ole rubber mallot......at said trouble area.......ha ha......;))
    Check out your "Shamu" pic'ie,!!!!!

I flew him.....back in the late 80's...ya know.....before you had to wear
'Cataract' sunglasses......from all the god awful tacky 'liveries' these days...what the hell is up with that 'pokie man'...whatever...
anyway, being the shameless "Aviation" Geek back then as well...........I called Southwest....and practically begged for my "I Flew Shamu" luggage sticker.......they were in the mail that week.......Thanks Southwest......!!!!

  3. On the surface it would appear that A&P Mechanics are required to "just folow the manual" whenever we execute the process of maintenance. This first glance at A&P duties can lead one to preclude that anyone whom reads can work on, and ultimately repair, aircraft and associated components. A&P's whom view their duties as "A Job" may be able to function in this narrow scope of knowledge to perform the job of "Parts Changer" and feel realative saftey from reprisals from a benevolent and reasonable FAA. A&P's whom view their duties as a "Craft" or "Profession" know that the manuals are a great sorce of information but can prove to be inadaquate for some situations. The scope and ultimate duty of an A&P mechanic is a safe, fully functional and reliable aircraft. Aquiring more information, through first hand experience or through the experiences of others, is essential in building a knowledge base to understand, diagnose, troubleshoot and repair aircraft and components. More information never hurts those who know what to do with that information. Be safe and expand your knowledge of your craft everyday.

  4. Cerebus,
You are absolutley correct! I would submit that we perform a craft, but, as you know there are several "parts changers' that work around us.
