Swine Flu (H1N1) and Line Maintenance

There is a lot of talk lately about Swine Flu. As Line Mechanics we are exposed to a lot of germs and a lot of people (especially when you work up in the cabin). I know there is some debate about getting the H1N1 vaccination. If you can, I think you should. If you cannot for whatever reason you have to wear gloves at all times when you work up in the cabin and always wash your hands when you get back to the shop!
I actually think that the companies we work for should supply us with the H1N1 shots. The company will be the most affected by employees missing work and so should help by having the vaccine available at the job site.
People I work around have had Swine Flu and it is a really scary thing for those of us with small children. Be careful out there! Glove up!

  1. Goat,

H1N1 is just the start of things that we might be exposed to in the near future.

With the world rapidly growing into a global economy, we will be having plenty of chances to be exposed to various viruses and microbiological hazards brought into our aircraft by accident. Look at what people try and carry on in their luggage! Try thinking of something bizarre that you would never carry in a suitcase on vacation, then go over to the TSA check point and look at items they remove from baggage.

And how long will it take for someone to get an item, say a small container full of something deadly that could be dispersed inside the cabin and infect the plane as to make it into a jet propelled dirty bomb?

Gloves? I think we'll need Level 4 hazmat suits.

  3. In defense of anonymous, I have looked in the TSA locker at the airport and there are some amazing things in there. People will try to bring all manner of items onto a plane. For the most part these people mean no harm but they just do not think about what they are doing. I have been involved in instances when some thing leaked out of a container and into the airplane cabin causing the plane to have to land and unload etc. I have to say that as much as I have my issues with the TSA, I have not experienced anything like that since they started screening all luggage that folks bring onto a plane.

  4. The joys of flying innocently and not realising the stupid things people will bring on board or check as luggage--not to mention the mail being shipped....things are better but general awareness is pretty complacent. Getting back to the immediate threat of contact with the customer or fellow employee who may or may not have a contagious disease - frequent handwashing and gloves and anti-bacterial soap readily available..

    On a side note ...
There's not much that can protect you from the temptingly contagious bad attitudes but common sense to try and maintain and work with a positive attitude can go a long way -the 'can do' philosophy over 'it's not my job'
